Escape and Hide - in Public?
This one wasn't as frightening as it was exciting and uplifting. It also seems to take place in the near future... somewhat cyberpunk as well.
______
Dream:
I found myself in some sort of low-security prison camp, not knowing what I was being held for. I had the distinct impression that I wouldn't be released any time soon. There were only a few others in captivity with me but I didn't know any of them.
Suddenly I felt like escaping, so I did.
Wherever I was, it was in a highly urbanized area and there were a lot of people milling around. It was a generic city from the looks of it, [so I would assume it was no particular city] and the sky was overcast. Feeling somewhat exposed, I went into the nearest building, which turned out to be a mall inside.
Not long after entering, I noticed the large number of security guards in full urban combat gear. Most of these guards were standing at identification checkpoints. These checkpoints were simply waist-high metal posts in front of doorways, and as people pass between the posts, they are identified to the guards electronically. Something told me to stay away from those posts and any of those guards.
I assumed that most of those identification posts would be on the ground floors near major entrances, so I took the nearest elevator up as far as I could go. At the top floor I walked out of the elevator to realize that these ID Posts were in front of store entrances as well! I turned around and went back down a floor and found a place to cut across without passing through any ID Posts. I then went down a flight of stairs back to the bottom, hoping that I had escaped all the checkpoints that dotted the length of the main hallway at the mall.
All of the sudden I realized I walked right through one of the ID Posts. I froze, not knowing if I still had time to "undo" it and walk back through, but I saw an unguarded and busy exit just up ahead. That is when people's cell phones started ringing all at once. They would answer the phone and listen for a moment, and respond
"No, I haven't seen him," I knew they were talking about me.
Through the masses of people I could not see any of the security guards, but cell phones continued to ring.
"Scaramanx? No I haven't seen Scaramanx," how much more proof did I need? It was me they were looking for and soon everyone would know it. Noticing that I was the only one not on a cell phone, I put mine up to my ear, pretended to answer it, and said
"No, I haven't seen him," and went to try to hide in a corner.
Then a stranger turned to me and looked me in the eye. I could tell he recognized me. He was on the phone as well.
"Scaramanx? Haven't seen him," and he ended the call. Another person walked up to me, also still on the phone,
"He's not here, but if I see him I'll call you back."
They were here to help me escape.
